Social media scammers are reportedly posing as the official WhatsApp Support account to defraud users without having personal information. Their username and profile picture may look like a support account, but – most importantly – they do not have the verified badge that any official account would have. Some scammers may include the verified badge in their profile picture, but users should not be fooled. By posing as the official WhatsApp account, scammers may ask users for personal information. They may ask for a verification code to access their account information or they may even ask for their credit card information as proof of identity.

How to report a WhatsApp scammer

If you are contacted by a fraudulent WhatsApp account, you should block them and report them. Report a scammer by holding down a message, opening the context menu, and clicking “Report”. When you report an account, WhatsApp will receive the last five messages sent to you, as well as the user ID and details of the message, such as when it was sent and the type of message. To block them, open the conversation and just press “block”. They will no longer be able to send you messages. Learn more about how to stay safe online and protect yourself from fraud.
