Vladimir Putin has suffered an “embarrassing loss” of his navy flagship and is unable to replace it in the Black Sea, Britain’s defense chiefs said on Thursday. But they added that its naval forces are still able to hit Ukrainian targets. They said about 20 Russian navy ships, including submarines, had been deployed in the “operational zone” of the Black Sea. They stressed, however, that the Russian President could not replace the Moskva, a 510-man cruiser, as its ships were prevented from crossing the Bosphorus. Ukrainian army leaders say they have sunk the flagship with two rockets.

There are fears that dozens of crew members have died. Russia tried to tow the wounded ship back to port, but sank in a storm, according to reports. In its latest update, the Ministry of Defense in London said: “About 20 Russian Navy vessels are currently in the Black Sea operational zone, including submarines. “The Bosphorus Strait remains closed to all non-Turkish warships, rendering Russia incapable of replacing the lost Moskva cruiser in the Black Sea. “Despite the embarrassing losses of the Saratov landing craft and the cruiser Moskva, the Russian Black Sea Fleet retains the ability to strike Ukrainian and coastal targets.” Britain is sending Brimstone anti-ship missiles within weeks to boost the naval defense of the Ukrainian government of Volodymyr Zelensky. Armed Forces Secretary James Heppe told the Commonwealth earlier this week: “Recently, Ukraine has requested long-range surface-to-air missiles, and the government is investigating whether Brimstone reserves could be released for such purposes. “We will provide Brimstone in the coming weeks. “This remains largely in line with our principle of evolving our support for Ukraine as the conflict unfolds and their capability requirements change.” The UK is expected to offer Brimstone ground-based systems instead of those that can be launched by aircraft. The Brimstone 2 has a top range of 37 miles, a head of 6.3 kg and can be used with laser search guidance or autonomous targeting. Putin is believed to have sought to capture the historic port of Odessa on the Black Sea in the early stages of his invasion, which began on February 24, but these attempts were met with strong Ukrainian resistance.
