During a press conference Thursday morning about an upcoming multi-day motorcycle rally, Deputy Chief of Staff Tris Ferguson said she believed there would be charges, but after a further question to police the comment was disputed. A police spokesman said the woman would not be charged. “A woman living outside the countryside has been identified. She has been spoken to, she has shown remorse for her actions and the police are confident they will not repeat the crime,” the force said in an email. “It was processed by other means, which is police practice.” Asked to clarify what that meant, the spokesman said police sometimes use “informal procedures” to complete criminal investigations, which could include the use of city regulations, diversion programs or warnings. “[We] “We are pleased that this was an isolated incident that will not happen again from this person,” Ottawa police wrote in an email. The January 29 incident sparked widespread condemnation by politicians. It happened on the first day of the Freedom Escort demonstration that turned into a weekly street blockade around Parliament Hill.
