“We are confident that in the coming weeks, we will continue to move in that direction,” Dr. Luc Boileau, Quebec’s interim director of public health, told a news conference on Thursday. “We can confirm that the decision on whether to continue [with mandatory masks] after 14 will take place early next week. “We will have more complete data,” he said. Earlier on Thursday, sources told Radio Canada that Boileau would announce his recommendation to abolish mask orders by the middle of next month. Radio Canada then learned that Boileau was still considering his decision. During the press conference, Boileau said all signs indicate that the spread of the virus is slowing down gradually – not fast enough for public health officials to feel comfortable asking the Quebec government to get rid of the mask rule. Even when masks become optional in most public places, the director of public health said they would still be needed in healthcare and public transport “for a while”. The latest forecasts from the Quebec Institute for Health Research, INESSS, show a reduction in COVID-19 hospitalizations over the next two weeks. Quebec will be the only province to require a mask in most indoor public spaces when Prince Edward Island removes its mask order on May 6th.
Take COVID-19 twice in less than 3 months
Boileau said public health professionals in the county are also seeing a trend of COVID-19 re-infections with variant BA.2. He said between five and 10 percent of recent cases involve people who have been infected with COVID-19 for the past two months and are now becoming infected for the second time. In light of this, Boileau said the province is changing its guidelines and now recommends that people with symptoms undergo a rapid test if at least two months have passed since their last infection. Previously, the county advised people to take tests only if three months had passed.
