A South Yorkshire police officer was seriously injured in an attack Detectives investigating the attack want to hear from witnesses or anyone with information about the incident. The policeman was taken to hospital after the attack. Detective Inspector Mark Cockayne, Senior Investigative Officer, said: “Three Barnsley men, aged 20, 19 and 14, have been arrested under Section 5 of the Public Order Act and are suspected of assaulting an emergency officer and remain in police custody at this time. “An investigation is under way and we are now seeking to identify other suspects in connection with this serious, violent attack. “If you were in the area at the time and saw or heard anything suspicious, contact us and let us know what you know. “If you do not feel comfortable talking to the police directly, you can contact Crimestoppers – a completely independent charity – where you can remain 100 percent anonymous.” Barnsley Charge d’Affaires Paul Ferguson added: “This was a serious attack on an officer who was just carrying out his duties in the neighborhood. “This is a heinous crime committed against an officer, a colleague with a family, who worked last night to keep the community he serves safe. “As with all victims of this type of crime, it is supported by our officers and the investigation continues at a rapid pace to identify those responsible. “I know there are footage of the incident circulating on social media and I understand that what happened will cause concern in the local community. “We have increased patrols in the area and this continues today (Wednesday, April 27) and I will urge anyone who is worried or who wants to share something to speak to one of our officers. They are there to reassure you and make you feel safe. “
