In a speech on UK foreign policy on Wednesday night, Liz Truce said the United Kingdom rejects the “false choice between Euro-Atlantic security and Indo-Pacific security” in favor of a “global NATO”. “I mean NATO needs to have a global perspective, ready to deal with global threats,” Tras said. “We need to prevent threats to the Indo-Pacific by working with allies such as Japan and Australia to ensure that the Pacific is protected. “We have to make sure that democracies like Taiwan are able to defend themselves.” Western nations have argued that Russian President Vladimir Putin should not be allowed to win the Ukraine war or be seen as invading another country with impunity, amid fears he could encourage China to act aggressively against Taiwan. Tras’s speech echoes a similar message issued by the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Boris Johnson at the Munich Security Conference in February. The comments come as NATO member states discuss the alliance’s new “strategic concept”, which outlines its mission for the next decade and is to be agreed at the next NATO summit in Madrid on June 29-30. There is a lively debate among members of the alliance about how much emphasis the new document should place on China’s security threats to the Indo-Pacific. Tras, meanwhile, has urged Western allies to supply Ukraine with warplanes, saying the nation’s war on Russia is “our war” because Ukraine’s victory is a “strategic imperative for all of us”. He added: “Heavy weapons, tanks, planes – digging deep into our stocks, increasing production. We have to do all this. “ Earlier, Downing Street refused to block the training of Ukrainian pilots or the deployment of British aircraft in Eastern Europe. “While there are no plans to send things like planes from the UK, we certainly want to work with other countries to ensure that Ukraine has the equipment it needs,” said a spokesman for Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
