Macron was talking to a small crowd at a market in Cergy, a northwestern suburb of Paris, when one of the crowd threw a handful of cherry tomatoes at him. The tomatoes hit a passerby and did not connect with the president, but led to voices from the crowd and his guard shouting “missile” before opening an umbrella to protect Macron from further attack. He then walked away from the spot. Nearly half – 48 percent – of suburban voters voted for far-left candidate Jean-Luc Melanson in the first round of the April 10 presidential election, with Macron far behind with just 23.7 percent. “I came to say that I heard everyone’s voices and that I will continue to deal with the neighborhoods that face the most difficulties… every day,” Macron said before the incident.
