A Hamilton East – Stony Creek spokesman was ousted from the party in March after what the NDP described as a “pattern of worrying behavior” suggesting it could “feed on Islamophobic, homophobic and racist views”. The NDP said it found out during the audit that Miller was a member of the Facebook group Worldwide Coalition Against Islam. At Queen’s Park on Wednesday, Miller told a news conference that he had never logged on to Facebook and did not know the username or password for any of his office’s social media pages. The IT researchers he hired since then have found that at least a dozen people in his office have had access to social media pages since they were created in 2007, he added. “We have convincing evidence that there were multiple, unauthorized connections to our account from multiple devices in multiple cities,” said Miller, who said he was working with a legal team and IT experts to look into what happened. The Facebook password has just changed, the MPP said. Miller distributed prints showing a Facebook notice from January 30, 2018, saying “You have stopped being a member of the WCAI (World Alliance against Islam).” The pages he forgot contained the name “Paul” at the top. Miller said that was all that was given to him by the party to explain his departure, but that “he was not absolutely” a member of the Facebook group. He told reporters to look at his Facebook page, where there are “dozens and dozens of photos of me with the Sikh population, with the Muslim population.” Miller handed out copies of the image, which he said was given to him by the Ontario NDP, to explain why he left the party. “How can I leave a team I have never been to or a platform I have never used?” asked.

NDP says behavior has crossed “every reasonable line”

An Ontario NDP spokesman did not respond to a request for comment Wednesday, except that the party has insisted on its statement since last month. Lucy Watson, the New Democrats’ provincial director, said March 23 that Miller had been expelled from the party because of a “pattern of behavior.” [that] exceeded all reasonable limits “, including participation in the anti-Muslim Facebook group. “Any other candidate and any other member of the parliamentary group – in any context and attempting to run for any reasonable party – will be excluded because he has always been a member of an Islamophobic, racist group,” she said in a statement. He also referred to a 2018 complaint to the Ontario Court of Human Rights by former staff member Todd White alleging that Miller had intimidated employees, made racist, sexist and homophobic comments and abused campaign office resources. White was an active party volunteer and, at the time, chairman of the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board. While this issue had been “satisfactorily resolved”, according to the NDP, Watson pointed out the alleged racist and homophobic comments. The party said the “old pattern” continued with the findings of an investigation into Hamilton Public School Board. Miller’s wife, Carol Paikin Miller, is administrator of Section 5 of the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Council. Her time as an administrator included controversies, such as sanctions and calls for her resignation, following a report that concluded that some administrators had made racist remarks to a former student named Ahona Mehdi. One of the witnesses quoted in the report said that an administrator, identified by Mehdi as Paikin Miller and her husband, was heard “mocking and muttering in a fit of rage” when other board members discussed the termination of a program that put police officers in schools.

Miller will be independent

Miller dismissed the NDP’s reports of a motif as “utter nonsense” and said he believed his wife’s “condition” had nothing to do with his own. Miller added that he has submitted documents to run as an Independent for the June 2 election in the equestrian event he has represented since 2007, and will face:

Jason Farr, a longtime councilor who is running for the Liberals. Neil Lumsden, a former CFL player, attends the Ontario PC Party. Zaigham Butt, candidate for the first time representing the NDP.

He also said he was taking “multiple legal action” against NDP leader Andrea Horwath and the party, including for illegal dismissal, defamation and human rights abuses. “This is no longer the Labor Party,” Miller said, adding that he believed the party was moving in a different direction, but was not sure which one it would be. “It’s very scary what he’s doing,” he said of Horwath.
