After leaving the hotel, police believe the perpetrator snatched and attacked another victim in the Gulfport area. The man, who police described only as a city public servant, was shot and taken to a local hospital, where he later died. The situation escalated to a dead end when the perpetrator entered a barricade inside the Canal Grocery grocery store. After 20-30 minutes of failed negotiations, police used tear gas in the building and stormed the store. However, upon entering, police found the suspect dead. Officials did not say how the suspect died. The Gulfport Police Department did not name the suspect. A witness at the hotel told WLOX he saw people leaving the area after hearing the shots. The daughter of the hotel owner told the report that the situation started after a fight for money, which escalated into shootings. “This is out of character for this area in particular, but we take it very seriously, as you may or may not see our entire swat team here,” said Adam Cooper, the incoming Gulfport Police Chief.
