The Richmond RCMP warns of a fraud involving a fake taxi, a fake driver and a fake passenger. A scam that police warned people about in the Toronto area a few months ago has reached BC The Richmond RCMP has issued a warning about a debit card fraud involving a fake taxi, a fake driver and a fake passenger. As of April 22, there have been four reports of elaborate fraud against people in crowded parking lots. A young man approaches asking for help to pay for his taxi because he does not have enough money. The fake taxi driver then claims that he does not accept credit cards, only debit cards and when the unsuspecting victim goes to pay by pressing, he claims that the tap function does not work. When the good Samaritan then hands over their debit card for processing, the driver and his accomplice distract them and the driver gives back a fake card. By then, he has collected the pin number for the real victim card and only later the unsuspecting sign realizes that the criminals have made several purchases, accumulating hundreds of dollars. Richmond RCMP Dean Ian Henderson says, “This scam seems new to Richmond City, but we already have seven victims reporting the matter to the police in recent days. Investigators from the Front Line and Financial Crime Unit are working diligently to locate and locate the suspects. “In the meantime, we believe there is a need to warn the public about this fraudulent activity.” The fake taxi is described as a white Toyota Camry with a white taxi license plate on top. The fake taxi driver is described as a man from Fiji or South Asia in his early 20s, while his accomplice is described as a Middle Eastern man in his 20s. In February, York District Police issued a warning about the same thing happening in the Toronto area.
