Mr Fahie, who was elected in February 2019, was arrested by the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in Miami on Thursday morning, according to BVI Governor John Rankin, who said he had been informed of the arrest by the British government. Mr Fahie and Oleanvine Maynard, chief executive of the BVI Port Authority, were both arrested on charges of conspiracy to smuggle more than five kilograms of cocaine into the United States and money laundering, the Miami Herald reported. They met with DEA undercover agents posing as cocaine traffickers to investigate an alleged $ 700,000 (5 560,000) cash shipment on a plane believed to be heading to BVI, authorities told the newspaper. The couple will appear in federal court in Miami today (April 29). A third man, Kadeem Maynard, the son of BVI Port Authority chief Maynard, was also arrested in connection with the DEA secret case, but not in Miami, according to the Herald. British Foreign Secretary Liz True has said she is “terrified of these serious allegations” against the leader of the ruling Virgin Islands Party. He said Mr Rankin would hold an emergency meeting to “determine the next steps”. One of the next steps would be to urgently publish the report of the Committee of Inquiry into the governance of British overseas territory in the Caribbean, Ms True said. He added: “This arrest demonstrates the importance of the recently concluded committee of inquiry.”
