“We need to focus on common sense, bipartisan action that can really be done and bring people together,” Gottheimer said. “I hear this from the people of the homeland. These are all areas where both sides can come together and complete real things.” The areas include many bipartisan bills that members have already worked on together, bills that Gottheimer says would have a good chance of being passed only if they had to go to the polls. Members also call on the leadership to act swiftly to prevent the administration from deciding to end Title 42 on May 23, a flashpoint between some Democrats in the Capitol and the administration. The Trump-era immigration order used under former presidents Donald Trump and Joe Biden has allowed border officials to quickly send migrants back to their countries of origin, citing a public health crisis. The series is expected to be reversed in late May, but the decision to end it has disappointed some Democrat front-line members, who have argued that the government does not yet have a sufficient plan to tackle an expected rise in immigration once. the order ends. Many of the moderate Democrats running for re-election have been hit back in their homeland by Republican attacks on immigration. The issue of Title 42 has become a major point of contention in the Senate, where immigration policy has delayed the approval of a $ 10 billion Covid-19 bailout package before the break. Republicans had insisted on voting for an amendment that would prevent the administration from ending politics. But New York Democrat Chuck Sumer, the leader of the majority, had refused to allow the amendment on the floor, arguing that immigration policy and funding for Covid-19 were separate issues. Proceeding to block the administration in Title 42 would certainly meet with strong opposition from some progressives, who have been pushing the administration for months on the issue.
