LOS ANGELES (AP) – James Corden will succumb to his evening TV show on CBS next year.
Corden announced his decision during the filming of “The Late Late Show” on Thursday, which began in 2015.
In a statement, CBS President and CEO George Cheeks praised Corden for his “huge creative and comedic swings,” including “Carpool Karaoke” videos in which Corden and pop stars such as Adele and Paul McCartney sang on the road.
Corden’s contract was due to expire this August, but the London-born actor and writer has extended the deal for another season. He will leave the show that is broadcast every week at 12:37 p.m. east in the spring of 2023.
“We hope he could stay longer, but we’re very proud that CBS did it at its American home and that this collaboration will be extended one more season on ‘The Late Late Show,'” Cheeks said.
The network had no further comment, including who could replace Corden. The previous host of the show was Craig Ferguson.
Corden was considered an unlikely choice when he was named host of “The Late Late Show”. He starred in the British comedy series “Gavin & Stacey” and won the Tony Award in 2012 for his Broadway performance in “One Man, Two Guvnors”, but was not widely known to American viewers.
“Carpool Karaoke” and other comedies, including “Crosswalk the Musical”, proved to be popular on the internet, creating Corden and the show’s scope beyond its original show.
He has announced his decision in advance, including a December 2020 podcast episode of “Smartless”. Corden said he had “an overwhelming feeling that my family was walking to the beat of my drum for a long time.”
Corden said he did not have an end date for the show in mind and that “it would always be a bigger family decision than a professional one. It will have to do with people we miss very much and whom we miss. “
